On the southern shore of Lake Michigan in Whiting, Indiana, Whihala Beach County Park offers a wide stretch of sandy shoreline with some of the best views of the Chicago skyline you’ll find along the Indiana coast.
It’s a popular spot for families, beachgoers, and anyone looking to enjoy the lake without heading all the way into the Dunes.
What makes Whihala special is its mix of urban convenience and natural beauty. You’ve got soft sand and swimming areas, but you’re also just steps away from downtown Whiting, with restaurants, shops, and the lively Lakefront Park area nearby.
It’s a true community beach that draws both locals and visitors throughout the summer.
Whihala Beach is open daily during the summer season, typically from dawn to dusk.
Swimming season generally runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with lifeguards on duty during peak hours.
*Swimming is only permitted when a lifeguard is on duty.
Admission to the beach itself is free; however, parking fees are generally collected during the summer season.
Expect a daily parking fee of around $7–$10 per vehicle (varies year to year).
Multiple lots serve the park, but they can fill quickly on hot weekends.
Arrive early for the best spots.
Dogs are not allowed on the swimming beach.
They are permitted in other areas of the park if leashed.

Whoa Zone!
If you’re looking for more than just sand and sun, WhoaZone is your spot. This one-acre floating aqua park sits right off the shore at Whihala Beach, with monkey bars, slides, towers, bridges, and jumping platforms. You need to be at least 7 years old and 45″ tall, and a competent swimmer, to take part.
Prices are around $23 for a “Single Splash” (50 minutes) and you can buy more sessions or an all-day pass. Because it gets busy, especially on hot weekends, scheduling your hour in advance is smart.
You’ll also find stand-up paddleboard and kayak rentals available through WhoaZone during the summer season. Pricing varies by item and duration, so it’s best to check the WhoaZone website or contact them directly to get the latest rates.

Can I fish from shore?
Absolutely!
Fishing is a popular activity at Whihala Beach and the adjoining Whiting Lakefront Park.
Anglers cast for perch, bass, salmon, and trout depending on the season.
You can fish from the shoreline outside of the designated swim areas, or take advantage of the fishing pier, which extends out into Lake Michigan and offers great views of both the water and the Chicago skyline.
The pier is typically open during regular park hours, from dawn to dusk, making it easy to plan an early morning cast or a sunset trip.
Make sure to bring a valid Indiana fishing license.
