Washington Park Beach
Set along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Michigan City, Washington Park Beach is a local landmark and one of the most popular spots on Indiana’s coast.
The beach stretches for nearly two miles, framed by dunes, parkland, and the city’s historic 1904 East Pierhead Lighthouse - Indiana’s only working lighthouse.
With 140 acres of park space and plenty of activities both on and off the sand, Washington Park is more than just a place to swim.
Visitors can sunbathe, picnic, fish, or stroll the pier, while families enjoy the nearby zoo, playgrounds, and community events that happen throughout the year.
Washington Park and its beach are open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. (hours may adjust seasonally).
There are lifeguard stations, and signage that tell you when lifeguards are on duty.
During the summer season, there is a daily parking fee (typically ~ $15 - $25 per vehicle depending on residency).
Michigan City residents with a park pass pay reduced rates.
Several large lots serve the beach and park, but they fill quickly on hot weekends and during special events.
Leashed pets are allowed in the park, but not on the designated swimming beach.

It’s free to use, weather-dependent, and runs daily in summer from about 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitors can expect water spray features that are kid-friendly, making it a fun break from the big lake waves.
Bandstand & Amphitheater
Playground
Kids can burn off energy at several playgrounds located within the park.
There’s a live vibe at Washington Park thanks to the Guy Foreman Amphitheater (also called the Millennium Plaza Bandstand or band shell).
Summer evenings regularly bring music, concerts, and community events. If your visit lines up with a concert night, it’s a great chance to enjoy local talent.

Washington Park Zoo
Just a short walk from the beach, the Washington Park Zoo is a favorite stop for visitors.
The zoo is home to more than 90 species, including big cats, wolves, monkeys, and a variety of birds and reptiles. Spread across 15 acres, it’s set on a hillside with winding paths and natural landscaping, making it both scenic and fun to explore.
Seasonal exhibits and a petting zoo add to the experience, and the observation tower offers one of the best elevated views of Lake Michigan and the city.
East Pierhead Lighthouse
The historic East Pierhead Lighthouse, built in 1904, is one of Michigan City’s most iconic landmarks - and the only working lighthouse in Indiana.
Visitors can stroll the pier for close-up views of the lighthouse, panoramic scenes of the lake, and unbeatable sunset photos.
The pier is also a popular spot for fishing and lake watching. Just remember to be cautious on windy or rough-water days, as conditions can make the pier slick.

The pier and lighthouse area are especially popular with anglers, offering deeper water access and a chance at bigger catches while enjoying some of the best views in Michigan City. Depending on the season, you can reel in perch, trout, salmon, bass, and more. Shoreline fishing is also allowed outside of the guarded swim zones, giving you plenty of options if you’d rather stay on the sand.
